It is PSYU's privilege to host a joint event with the Department of Physics and Astronomy to welcome Dr Lockyer to York University. Please join us on November 20th at noon as Dr Lockyer will deliver a talk titled "The Future of Particle Physics". -- As director of Fermilab, Dr. Lockyer is leading the future of particle physics into a new era. Now that the Higgs boson has been discovered, what are the next big science questions and challenges to be tackled, and how do we build the experiments to get there? -- Last year in February, an amazing group of 15 PHAS students journeyed to Chicago to visit Fermilab, for which Dr Lockyer is the director. Unfortunately for us, he was away that week, although we did get a chance to crash his office. It is now our chance to meet this distinguished and successful man in person. Dr. Lockyer’s distinguished career in physics began with receiving his B.Sc. degree from York. Since then, he has served as director of TRIUMF, Canada’s premier laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, and co-spokesperson for the CDF experiment at Fermilab, which co-discovered the top quark. He led one of the first measurements of the bottom quark lifetime, a crucial result for illuminating the quark flavor mixing puzzle, for which he was awarded the American Physical Society’s Panofsky prize in 2006. There will be refreshments provided by the department. All are welcome to join, not just PSYU members, so bring interested friends and colleagues!
